Sailboat is Gone

I am looking at a picture on CNN taken from under the I-10 bridge across to the Isle of Capri Casino. It is across the area formerly occupied by the marina where I have my sailboat. There is nothing left.

CNN said that they counted 30 something boats on the rocks. Mine has to be one of them. I would have moved it, but I don't have a trailer. It stays in the water, and there was no safe place to take it.

Hurricane Rita: Saturday, What Happened?

We got up this morning, trying to find out if we still had homes. My in-laws only have basic cable, and the morning news shows weren't showing much. There was a lot of frustration. Wava's sister, Gail, invited us down to her house so that we could see what is happening on satalite. At first look, it looks like Lake Charles is going to be OK.

We are still hearing from folks via email. The word on the ground from Sulphur is that there is some wind damage, but not too bad.

Orange Tree

Earlier this year, Ray Rials, from our church, brought us this satsuma tree (small oranges). Ray loves to graft trees, and this one is no exception. He uses the root system from a native tree that produces great root systems but few oranges. Then he grafts on a high-yield variety of orange tree. This one is a new variety from LSU. Orange trees rarely produce fruit their first year. This one produced 11!

Click on the photos to see them "up close and personal."

East Texas Ministers' Meeting

This past October 7-8, Rick spoke at the East Texas Ministers' Meeting (Church of God, Anderson, IN). You can use the links below to download notes from two of those sessions. All links are in PDF format, which can be read by using Adobe Reader.

Download "Change, Part 1.pdf"

Use the link above to download notes from the first session on Thursday night, October 7.

Download "Change, Part 2.pdf"

Use the link above to download notes from the second session on Friday night, October 8.

Download "From Modernity to Post-Modernity.pdf"

Use the link above to download a paper that Rick wrote for a class while working on his doctorate at Fuller Theological Seminary. This paper covers many of the same concepts covered in the two presentations above, plus a couple not covered in the Texas presentations. It also contains an analysis at how the Church of God (Anderson, IN) is doing in the cultural transition from modernity to post-modernity. Although written nearly three years ago, this paper is even more current today in light of recent events.

Family Reunion 2004

We attended the Herrington Family Reunion this past week. The reunion has really become two events. On Saturday night, a reunion takes place in a cow pasture out of Martin, Missippi. They said this year that there are now 491 decendents and spouses. In addition, many people in the community attend.

The main reunion is so large that the family of Ted Herrington (Wava's grandfather) has a separate reunion on Sunday afternoon. The pictures in this photo album (link at left) come from that event. It took place at Oaktibee Lake near Meridian, Mississippi. Four generations were present.

The first few pictures were taken on Saturday afternoon. We went fishing at the old Brown homeplace. The girls caught 5 bass. I cleaned them, Mamma cooked them, and we ate them Sunday night.

A good time was had by all.

Rick
